Sat 4 Jan – Jack and the Beanstalk, New Brighton

It was all going so well! And now I’ve just had what’s probably one of the top 5 worst days of my life…

Things weren’t looking good when I woke up at 2am feeling sick and couldn’t get back to sleep. After a few hours it became clear that I had a very daunting prospect ahead of me. Somehow I had to find the energy to get out of bed, leave the house and spend the afternoon and evening entraining the public, when all I wanted to do was curl up in a ball and point my head in the direct of a well placed bucket.

Got through the first show but finally succumbed during the break in between and decorated the stairs back stage with everyone’s least favourite kind of paint (I was so close to making it out of the fire exit…). But the show must go on, especially as my parents had chosen this night to come all the way up from the south coast to see me, so I gritted my teeth and thought about how pleased I’d be with myself once I got through it all. Unfortunately things were about to get even worse…

Just before the show began Emma (who plays Princess Jill) severely twisted her ankle on her way down the stairs (not the ones I’d been sick on, I’d like to add). So now we had a Jack who had strategically placed sick buckets in the wings and a Jill who couldn’t walk more than a few steps. By changing the entrances and exits to make them as short for her as possible, dropping most of her dancing and finding reasons for her to be carried on and off stage in creative ways, we triumphantly reached the finale.

Spoke to my Mum and Dad afterwards and they didn’t even notice anything was wrong! Mum thought Emma was being carried around cos she was a posh royal princess. Can’t believe we pulled it off, but I tell you, I’ve never been so happy to get back into bed. The whole day felt like some sort of horrible dream.
